I just wanted to say "Thank You" for creating your website and giving parents resources and encouragement to read to their babies. By way of a testimonial, I wanted to share with you why it's so important to read to your children from birth (or even pre-birth). Our son, Jeff, now a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in music composition wrote the following to us as a birthday gift this year to his father and me:

"For your birthdays, I thought long and hard about what I could give to you....The more I thought about the both of you, the more I realized just how much I missed being able to read together. Late at night, tucked into the large bed in your room with a good book, I had some of the best times of my life. Whether you read aloud to me or, as was later the case, we read aloud to one another, I really enjoyed the time before bed when we could relax and read. The stories we read were fit for reading aloud to one another, for if there were one gift I could give to either of you, it would be the magic of that hour of reading aloud before bed...Suffice it to say that without either of you, my imagination and intellect would be severely lacking. Whenever I questioned you about any book or talk at length about any subject, you were willing to answer me at length and provide me any sort of literary material to help me understand. I can only repay your generosity in kind with a collection of short stories that I think you both might enjoy."

Included with this loving tribute letter was a collection of short stories from H.P. Lovecraft, Steven Vincent Benet, Edgar Allen Poe, William Faulkner, and others. Needless to say, we cried at the touching tenderness and heartfelt thank you from our son. Little did we know then that the years of loving literature and sharing that love with our son would have the powerful impact it has had on this young person. As Jeff said, television should not be the large part of our lives that it is, and he believes that we should return to valuing reading books more than time spent in front of the television. ...Continue to spread the word about the many benefits that reading imparts on our families (and not just our children).

Best regards,
Gilda Strom
